"The International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS) is the largest scientific body within the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). It is also the only organization concerned with stratigraphy on a global scale. One of its major statutory objectives (Cowie et al. 1986) is the establishment of a standard, globally applicable stratigraphic scale, which it seeks to achieve through the coordinated contributions of a network of Subcommissions, Working Groups, and Committees." M. G. Bassett
GOALS
The main goal of this Regional Committee is to establish a standardized Stratigraphy of the Paleogene in South and Central America. It also aims to develop the biostratigraphic, chronostratigraphic and paleoecologic applications of this discipline and to inform the scientific community about the activities, research and results related to the Paleogene of South and Central America. The Regional Committee also endeavors to produce every year a list of the recent published work concerning the Paleogene in South and Central America.
