Soils Lab

Montane forest at Fortuna, Panama

Welcome to the homepage of the Soils Laboratory of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Instititue. We study how soils influence the ecology of tropical rain forests. Our emphasis is on the phosphorus cycle, especially the importance of organic compounds in the nutrition of plants.

We also study tropical and subtropical wetlands, with ongoing research in Panama (San San Pond Sak wetland, Bocas del Toro) and the USA.

We provide analytical services to the STRI community for analysis of soil and plant tissue. Link
