After completing a BSc in Ecology at Lancaster University, UK, I began a PhD with the soil and physical sciences group at Lincoln University, New Zealand. I am investigating the role of mycorrhizal fungi in organic phosphorus mineralization in forested systems, a relatively new and important area of research given the recent evidence for plant use of organic as well as inorganic phosphorus. I am working with a number of systems including two reforestation trials, one in New Zealand and the other a PRORENA site in Panama, as well as a soil chronosequence in New Zealand.
Being an ecologist as well as a soil scientist I am very interested in the ‘big picture’ – not simply how mycorrhizal fungi influence the dynamics of organic phosphorus in the soil, but also how this affects the ecosystem as a whole, both above and below ground.
