Research Interests

Tania Romero

I work as research technician in the soil laboratory with Dr. Ben Turner. I analyze the chemistry of soils from around the world, measuring nutrients and elements. We determine the different soil compounds using analytical equipment such as an ICP-OES, system for elemental analysis, the Lachat QuikChem® 8500 Flow Injection Analysis System to measure phosphate and nitrate, and a CE ElantechCNS analyzer for carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur analyses of solid samples.

I have a strong interest in marine ecology and through studying the marine ecosystem I have developed many skills including experience working with fish, mollusks, corals and other marine organisms.

My first research experience during my bachelor thesis involved the determination of pollutants in bivalves and sediments. I focused on identifying the level of pollution following an oil spill that occurred 16 years ago.
